Type 2 AC Charger in India: 7.4kW, 11kW and 22kW charger options

Type 2 AC chargers are built for places where EVs stay parked long enough: homes, offices, hotels, RWAs, restaurants, malls, commercial buildings and fleet depots. If the vehicle has a predictable parking window, AC charging can reduce capex, simplify installation and still deliver useful daily charging.

What is a Type 2 AC charger?

A Type 2 AC charger supplies alternating current to the vehicle. The vehicle’s onboard charger then converts AC into DC for the battery. This is why the car’s onboard charger capacity decides the actual charging speed, even if the wallbox is rated higher.

T2

Type 2 connector

Type 2 is widely used for AC charging in electric cars. It is common in home chargers, office chargers, hotel chargers and commercial parking chargers.

AC

AC charging logic

The charger delivers AC power. The onboard charger inside the EV controls how much AC power the vehicle can actually accept.

22

Up to 22kW category

In India, Level 2 AC charging is commonly mapped to 380–400V supply and up to 22kW. Type 2 is one of the compatible charger types.

Type 2 AC charger price in India

AC charger pricing depends on power rating, brand, cable/socket type, protection system, IP rating, RFID, OCPP, SIM/WiFi, CMS, pedestal, installation scope and warranty. Treat these as procurement ranges, not final invoices.

Single phase ₹25k–₹70k+

Indicative 7.4kW Type 2 AC charger hardware range for home, apartment and small commercial parking use.

Three phase ₹40k–₹90k+

Indicative 11kW Type 2 AC charger range, useful where EVs support higher onboard AC charging.

High AC ₹45k–₹1.2L+

Indicative 22kW Type 2 AC charger range. Smart public or dual-gun models can cost more.

Commercial setup Site-based

Wiring, pedestal, earthing, protection, civil work, meter, CMS and payment integration increase total project cost.

Price note: Public Indian product listings show 7.4kW Type 2 AC chargers around ₹45,000–₹49,500, 11kW smart units around ₹35,000–₹54,000 and 22kW smart/pedestal-ready units around ₹90,000–₹95,555 depending on brand and features. Verify GST, installation, cable length, pedestal, warranty and CMS separately.

7.4kW vs 11kW vs 22kW Type 2 AC charger

The right charger is decided by electricity connection, vehicle onboard charger capacity and parking duration. A 22kW charger does not magically charge every EV at 22kW. The vehicle must support it.

Where Type 2 AC chargers make business sense

Type 2 AC chargers work best where vehicles are not rushing away. They turn parking time into charging time, which is exactly why AC charging fits hospitality, workplaces and residential communities.

H

Hotels

Guest EVs stay overnight or for long meetings. A few AC chargers can become a premium amenity without DC-level capex.

O

Offices

Employees park for 6–9 hours. AC charging fits predictable workplace dwell time and can be managed with RFID or app access.

R

RWAs

Residents need dependable overnight charging, billing clarity and load management more than highway-style fast charging.

M

Malls

Shopping and cinema dwell time can support 11kW or 22kW AC charging, especially when paired with digital payments.

P

Parking lots

Commercial parking operators can build low-cost charging bays and use CMS for session tracking and tariff control.

F

Fleet depots

AC charging works for fleets only when route schedules and overnight parking windows are predictable.

C

Cafes & restaurants

AC charging can support destination charging, but quick-stop users may still need DC fast charging nearby.

B

Commercial buildings

Shared chargers for tenants, visitors and employees can be controlled through RFID, CMS, app access and usage reports.

When Type 2 AC charger is not enough

AC charging is the patient craftsman of EV infrastructure. It is not the right tool for every job. Use DC fast charging when vehicle turnaround, intercity travel or commercial utilization needs speed.

1
Highway charging

Intercity users want quick top-ups. A 60kW DC fast charger or higher is usually more suitable.

2
Petrol pumps

Energy retail needs faster turnover. AC chargers can support destination users, but DC charging drives commercial throughput.

3
Taxi and ride-hailing fleets

If vehicles lose revenue while parked, AC charging may create downtime unless overnight depot charging is planned.

4
E-bus, e-truck and fast LCV use

Large battery vehicles and high-utilization fleets usually require DC charging matched to route and duty cycle.

Type 2 AC charger installation requirements

AC charger installation looks simple until the electrical details arrive with a clipboard. Before buying, check load, cable routing, protection equipment, parking bay layout and weather exposure.

Sanctioned load Check whether your existing connection can support 7.4kW, 11kW or 22kW charging without overload.
Single-phase or three-phase supply 7.4kW commonly uses single-phase supply, while 11kW and 22kW usually require three-phase supply.
MCB/MCCB and protection Use proper protection, isolator, surge protection, residual current protection and fault protection as per site design.
Earthing quality Good earthing is non-negotiable. Poor earthing can trigger charger faults and create safety risks.
Cable size and distance Longer cable runs increase cost and voltage drop. Plan DB location and charger bay placement early.
Wall mount or pedestal Homes and offices may use wall mount. Open parking, hotels and malls may need pedestal or bollard protection.
IP rating and weather exposure Outdoor installations need weather-resistant charger housing, cable management and protection from waterlogging.
Parking bay planning Check cable reach, vehicle orientation, signage, bay marking, access control and user safety.

Smart Type 2 AC charger features to check

For a single home user, plug-and-play may be enough. For a commercial buyer, smart features decide billing, access control, uptime visibility and operational discipline.

OCPP Backend/CMS compatibility for public or shared charging
RFID Controlled access for offices, RWAs and fleets
CMS Session logs, uptime, tariff and remote control
UPI / QR Digital payment for public charging users
Load management Useful when many chargers share limited supply
Energy meter Important for billing, reporting and consumption tracking

Before buying a Type 2 AC charger, ask these questions

A charger procurement decision should not end at “price kya hai?” Put these questions in your vendor comparison sheet before shortlisting a manufacturer or CPO.

1

Which EVs will use it?

Check connector compatibility and onboard AC charging limits of target vehicles before choosing 7.4kW, 11kW or 22kW.

2

Who controls access?

Homes may use plug-and-play. RWAs, offices, hotels and parking operators usually need RFID, app access or CMS control.

3

How will users pay?

For public or paid charging, check UPI, QR payment, wallet, CMS billing, GST invoice logic and settlement flow.

4

What is included in quote?

Confirm charger, cable length, pedestal, installation, protection, earthing, civil work, SIM, CMS fees, warranty and AMC separately.

5

Who maintains it?

Ask for service response time, remote diagnosis, spare availability, warranty duration and annual maintenance terms.

6

Can it scale later?

If you plan 10–50 chargers later, evaluate load management, CMS architecture, cable trenching and distribution panel capacity today.
